Phillip Lanza (left), a PhD candidate working for the Farmers Datalab, has been named the recipient of this year’s MacDonald-Musgrave Outstanding Graduate Student Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to crop and soil sciences. Phillip’s work stands out for its innovative integration of agronomy, remote sensing, and digital tools to improve how crop performance is understood in real-world farming systems. He has played a central role in developing advanced anomaly detection and contextualization systems that support farmer-led, data-driven decision making. Beyond research, Phillip demonstrates strong entrepreneurial leadership, advancing pathways to translate academic innovations into practical tools for agriculture.
